You Just Missed It!
You Gotta Have Harp
Summer Camp
June 22-27 in Burlington, NJ

This will be the 3rd annual summer harp camp organized by Gloria Galante and Kathy DeAngelo. Join them for a full week of in-depth harp-playing on either the pedal or Celtic harp. This fun learning experience will be geared for the intermediate and advanced student, although we will add a beginner track if sign-up levels permit.

We are providing two different and complimentary tracks. Students may elect to take a morning track in one style and an afternoon track in the other or stay focused on a single track. We have evening activities scheduled to build camaraderie and interaction between the two groups.

A full schedule will be provided to each participant with their registration packet. Here is a preliminary itinerary :

  • Learn why/how/when to use ornamentation
  • Making the transition to playing by ear
    Afternoon Session: 2-5pm

    Group Activities: both tracks

The purpose of this camp is to build repertoire, skills and techniques and interaction with other harp players. Although there are 2 distinct tracks, we have evening activities that are meant to build camaraderie among all the players and engender support and encouragement to all. There will be evening dorm activities in addition to the following:
  • Early morning (pre-class): walk down by the riverside (optional activity)
  • Afternoon group sessions: the harp in various cultures
  • Sunday Night: arrival and check-in, dinner and a get-acquainted session.
  • Monday Night: Harpers circle; everyone take turns playing favorite pieces.
  • Tuesday Night: Movie & Pizza night
  • Wednesday Night: dinner out and attend a nearby local Irish music seisiún
  • Thursday Night: teacher and student concert, with other artists “sitting in”, open to the public

Experience Levels: We are tailoring this week to the intermediate-to-advanced player. If we have sufficient sign-up we will offer a beginner level. The Pedal Harp student should have at least 2-4 years playing experience and be able to play a few pieces either from memory or using sheet music. The Celtic Harp track will be taught by ear so students need not be able to sight-read to take this course.
Age Restrictions: We have students of all ages attend this camp. Students under 12, however, must be chaperoned by a parent or guardian when not attending workshops, unless by prior permission of the organizers.
    BYOH (Bring your own harp)
The student must bring their own harp. All pedal harp activities will take place in one area so there is no need to lug the harp around. The building is completely ADA-compliant, which means there are ramps and elevators!
    Borrowing a harp
We may have a limited number of harps to loan out to those traveling from a distance. Please contact Kathy to inquire.
